Having been involved from the get go with this book we waited nervously for it to arrive from the publishers on our doorstep.
It arrived last week and we have to say it’s gratifying; all our expectations have been fulfilled. Its lovely
Caringly edited by An Theunynck who made creative decisions and artistic waves through many of Stichting Kunstboek publications you might well have, has brought together a talented group of designers we know, Moniek Vanden Berghe, Geert Pattyn, Ivan Poelman Gudrun Cotteneir and some we will take note of from this moment on Lieve Buysse and a new comer n the floral designers world Michel Mulleneers.
The concept of the book was to show long lasting flowers at their best, flowers which are not silk, not paper not chemically saturated and colored but AVALANE flowers.
In Japan thanks to the involvement of Daniel Ost and choice of them in much of his work, and the sensitivity of Japanese to nature, they have them named ice flowers which already evokes a kind of fragile special ness about them. Delicate they are but their long lasting character ensures that there initial beauty. (.look at the water lilies, they are gorgeous) and anything made with them will last longer.
Hence the title of the book, Long lasting Beauty. The Six designers show their work and include comments on the use of these flowers, why they like them, when they do use and would use them, share tips they discovered working with them and most importantly of all say why they like them.
Chapeau as they say in Belgium or hats off as the English say to Frans Moens the man behind the flowers and years of research to get the standard and variety he has done .He works closely with designers to provide and get things just right and is known to make all kinds of out of the ordinary calls to bring just the right shade of a lily or a leaf to a panicking florist!
This book is going to make it in spades! We are not biased. just book savvy and experienced. Its got all it takes, a good clean contemporary well balanced layout, a new sophisticated product on the market and good designers who show you what can be done for long lasting beauty.

Found by us in Japan last year and soon to be published in Flanders so it qualifies for our found in Flanders tag, Daniel Osts small glossy and latest little keep sake.
It started its perfect life as a beautifully bound memory of an exhibition he did in Japan and as to be expected it’s a masterly publication which represents all Mr. Ost is known for.
Form, the t most exquisite degrees of tension and balance achievable, sympathetic harmonies of color and texture in his materials and signature use of captivating containers.
Again another book collectors item no Ost follower can be without nor newcomer to his work can leave alone.

Oh no, not another wedding book we both thought as we unpacked it.
But to our surprise this isn’t just another of those hundreds of humdrum ones out there.
This is and interesting publication with great underlying concept with lofty sponsorship which will set the book on the road to success.
It covers not only Robert Koenes wedding flowers, but also his
Companionable event organizers, their trimmings from sugared sweets to cakes and canapés, models, perfect wedding settings and Smithers Oasis practical design aids. From knife to cold glue in the Mediterranean!
A huge plus is that when you watch the DVD that accompanies the book, which highlights Koenes work. The sunlight romantic sunsets and breezes of Greece make you feel as if you were a guest at all six weddings yourself.
Koene lives and works in Greece and the clue to this package is the happy marriage of him and his professional partners collaboration and presentation.
Its an exuberant bright contemporary publication and as the title suggests a collection of Wedding Stories.
Country wedding island wedding, luxurious wedding, they are all there and three more too.
Every wedding is of course different and every one, (again buzzing about the DVD,) is shown on the extras section of the DVD, where we see Robert making step by step some of his special pieces
This is a good buy for concept, presentation, the exotic images, and of course his Dutch meets Greek meets floristry perspective, in hindsight it’s a short trip to Greece for viewers with flowers and event ideas aplenty. A stay at home travelers treat.

Hooray we have been waiting for this since November
The publishers by dropping Annual in the title, that’s been was there for the first 05/06 and second 06.07 editions I think we get the clue that the next one (yes looking ahead at the double) will come when the collection is ready before a years out or even later. One of our most FAVOURITE finds of the year which has seen us scurry off and look for earlier titles of this stunning approach to working with cut flowers evolved through the philosophies of Keita Kawasaki.From his point of view most plants used in floral design stand naked as it were and vunnerable.(.our description!) once we have determinedly taken them from the the soil that nutures and supports them and then removed their roots so we can do what we wish with them ..in a sense give them an new enviroment and life!..
He sensitively readdresses this situation by exploring a variety of seemingly new flower rests as he calls then or flower supports, supports that one presumes have been the foundation of Japanese ikebana traditions for centuries to acheive this. To do so he shows us his arrangements with flowers and leaves, buds and blossoms leaning snugly against crossed twigs, standing strongly amogst a tracery of branches , in split bamboo places, surrounded by fine twigs, ringed in strong leaves, placed at certain angles and balanced in delicately balled root systems soft ,mosses, binding grasses..the examples go on to fufil his title , one hundred forms of Hanakaburi. His ideas and practices are refined and simple and pure in a way we wonder why we dont see more of them being used.
There is no claim by him either that that these methods are entirely original but we feel the the point is that he is directing our gaze to wards flower arranging in another way showing us, how old methods can be refreshing and worth reviving.
Perhaps by following his example we can maintain an extra sensitivity towards our materials which after our working with them allow them to shine in their own natural beauty.

Geert Pattyn Master Florist
